Balanced Dukes - A JMU initiative that promotes the importance of work-life balance.
Bluestone - Refers to the stone used on the buildings located on the Quad; the original side of campus.
The Breeze - JMU school newspaper written by students and distributed every Thursday throughout the academic year.
Canvas - Online forum used by students and faculty to view and share information about classes.
CHOICES - Campus-wide open house for prospective students who have received an offer of admission to JMU.
CMSS - Center for Multicultural Student Services. Provides educational and celebratory programs and services that support an inclusive campus community in which members value diversity within themselves and others.
Duke Club - The financial support arm for JMU Athletics.
Dual Career and Community Services Program - Supports faculty and staff by providing assistance to employees new to the area. Support varies from simple guidance and information about community resources and organizations to assisting the relocating spouse/partner with their area job search.
Duke2Duke - Recognition program that gives employees the opportunity to show gratitude and acknowledge positive behaviors and actions in their peers.
Duke Dog - The official mascot of JMU.
Dukes - The name for JMU students.
eID - Electronic Identification assigned to all students, faculty, and staff.
ePAR - Electronic Personnel Action Requests are used for employment changes. Ex: hiring, resignation.
eVA - A web-based state-mandated procurement tool.
FLEX - Money on a JACard that can be used at dining halls, the bookstore, computer labs, and various off-campus vendors.
FM - Facilities Management encompasses all of the offices on campus that service JMU.
FROG - First Year Orientation Guide for students.
GenEd - General Education courses must be completed by all students to graduate from JMU.
JACard - JMU Access Cards are used as official JMU IDs for all students, faculty, and staff. Money can be loaded onto cards for meal plans and FLEX. JACards are also used for access to libraries, computer labs, and the UREC. Some Harrisonburg businesses accept the JACard as a form of payment or discount card.
MRDs - Marching Royal Dukes; the JMU marching band.
J Maddy - Nickname for James Madison.
Maymester - The May session of classes, in which many students take a class and are around to enjoy the great weather.
MSC - Mail Stop Code; used for intercampus mail.
MyMadison - Online hub for student and employee information. Employees can view pay slips, demographic information, training summaries, leave balances, tax information, and more. Students can register for classes, view official transcripts, view financial information, and make address changes.
ODS - Office of Disability Services.
OEO - Office of Equal Opportunity.
OPA - Orientation Program Assistant and summer orientation guide.
ORL - Orientation Resident Life, otherwise known as the Office of Residence Life.
PIQ - Technology Project Initiation Request is a request used for creating or updating an employee's access to certain information systems.
Res. Life - Residence Life and Housing Offices located in Huffman Hall.
UREC - University Recreation Center is the JMU fitness center. All students, faculty, and staff have free access to the facilities with their JACard. Immediate family members of faculty and staff are allowed free entry during designated times.
