JMU offers study abroad opportunities during Winter Break and Spring Break that may be eligible for financial aid. Learn how these programs may affect your financial aid, billing, and loan eligibility.
Winter Study Abroad Information
Study abroad programs through JMU can occur during the winter sessions in January, which is part of the spring semester. Your cost of attendance for the spring will only be increased by the travel and program fees associated with the study abroad program, if the study abroad course(s) are considered financial aid eligible.
In addition to your normal full-time spring aid, you may be eligible for additional Parent PLUS (subject to new regulations effective July 1, 2026 – view more information here: Parent PLUS Loan Updates - JMU). Private student loans may be used to supplement.
Your JMU bill will include tuition and any course fees (if applicable), along with the program fee associated with your study abroad program.
Any accepted anticipated aid will be used to pay towards these charges, but disbursement of the aid will not occur until the start of the spring semester if all financial aid items are completed. Any charges/expenses outside of these items will need to be paid upfront, and your financial aid refund, if applicable, can be used as a reimbursement for these upfront costs.
Spring Break Abroad Programs
Spring Break study abroad programs are semester-long courses with a study abroad component over spring break. As long as the study abroad course is considered financial aid eligible, your cost of attendance will be increased for the travel and program fee associated with the program. You are billed for tuition and fees as normal for your spring semester, but in addition, you will be billed for the program fee associated with the study abroad program.
In addition to your normal full-time spring aid, you may be eligible for additional Parent PLUS (subject to new regulations effective July 1, 2026 – view more information here: Parent PLUS Loan Updates - JMU). Private student loans may be used to supplement.
