Whether you are building the groundwork for an eventual graduate degree in business or simply enhancing the scope of your non-business major, the general business minor gives you a cross-discipline course of study that can enhance the market potential of your undergraduate degree.

Students seeking to declare the minor must electronically submit their application packets prior to March 1 or October 1 for admission consideration for the subsequent fall and spring semesters.
Competitive Admission
For students in majors other than listed below, admission is limited and competitive based on an application (see link, below) which consists of:
- A motivational statement for pursuing the General Business Minor (maximum 375 words or 2,000 characters)
- Minimum grades of “C” earned in General Education Cluster 1 (Critical Thinking) and Cluster 3 (Quantitative Reasoning) courses
Non-Competitive Admission
Students in good standing who declare in one of the following majors are automatically eligible for the General Business Minor:
- Chemistry
- Engineering
- Health Services Administration
- Hospitality Management
- Physics
- Sport/Recreation Management

Matriculated JMU students may only take one course required for the minor for transfer credit. Students who plan to take a course for transfer credit should complete the:
- Permission to Take Courses for Transfer Credit form (including all signatures, prior to registering for the course elsewhere).
Students may be required to obtain and submit a course description or course syllabus to determine equivalency.

Even though an advisor is not formally assigned, any advisor in the College of Business Advising and Support Center is able to advise a general business minor. Please contact the ASC to schedule an advising session.
Declaration Process
After acceptance into the minor program, students in good academic standing should submit a declaration of minor request via MyMadison.
Graduation Requirement
The general business minor requires a minimum 2.0 GPA for graduation on all courses completed at JMU. Transfer credit is not calculated in the GPA.
