Giving Opportunities

The Department of Social Work needs your help! Our Department prepares generalist Social Workers committed to strengthening community life for diverse individuals, families and organizations and promoting social justice through advocacy and action. We prepare students to work effectively in a broad spectrum of social service agencies in child welfare, mental health, addictions, health and youth development by providing an environment geared to addressing poverty, multiple forms of oppression, social injustice, and other human rights violations. We also prepare students for advanced academic study by providing an environment of academic excellence. Your tax-deductible contribution will help us develop these resources:

  • Promote student and faculty innovation, scholarship and professional development in the context of the department’s programs.
  • Expand opportunities for students and faculty to participate in regional and national conferences.
  • Support and help us expand our outreach programs including our Lifelong Learning Institute and Adult Health and Development Program.
  • Develop scholarships for deserving students who might otherwise not be able to afford to enroll in our programs or need extra support during their field placement.

How to Contribute to the Department of Social Work

List of Funds

This scholarship was established to receive charitable contributions to support students who have expenses for social work activities that may not be covered by traditional financial aid.  This might include expenses related to volunteer work and practica, and other high impact learning practices required by the department.  This fund will provide a scholarship of $500 each semester to students who have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and who apply, providing any additional information about hardships they may be experiencing at the beginning of the semester.

Donate

This fund supports the work of the Department of Social Work by providing funds for needs beyond the everyday functioning of the social work program. We have utilized funds to support faculty research, to send students to regional and national conferences, to support student involvement in community activities and to enhance special events that recognize the accomplishments of faculty while promoting the social work program and its goals.

This scholarship is for JMU students who are declared majors in the BSW program. Each year, the social work department faculty (with student input) meet to discuss current needs of students and create scholarship options to meet those needs with available funding. Specific criteria such as demonstrated financial need, involvement with student organizations and participation in field placement are possible requirements to receive funding which is decided upon by the faculty.

This scholarship was endowed by Dr. Bradfield, a longtime JMU Professor in Sociology. It is awarded in alternate years to a full-time social work major who has a GPA of at least 3.0, demonstrated financial need and an active commitment to community service and advocacy for vulnerable populations. Contributions to this fund honor Dr. Bradfield’s commitment to social work and sociology students at JMU and allow expansion of existing funds to support additional students
