On July 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Education implemented new regulatory requirements for professional nursing programs (34 CFR 668.43 (a) (5) (v) and 668.43(c)).

The National Council for State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) developed a webpage for professional licensure requirements in each state:  https://www.ncsbn.org/14730.htm

The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) make it easier for states to authorize institutions and for institutions to obtain approval to offer educational activities in a state other than its own (referred to here as offering "out-of-state learning activities"). SARA centralizes the authorization process for each institution in a single state called the institution’s “home state.”

Please refer to the JMU Professional Licensure Program Status by Jurisdiction Index to determine if a JMU program in which you have interest meets the educational requirements specified by the associated licensing board in your state or territory. You can search the chart by selecting a program from the Select Program menu or by selecting a state or territory from the Select State option. The Select Program option will indicate whether a specific program Meets Requirements or Does Not Meet Requirements for a state/territory. The Select State option lists the status of all programs in that state or territory. If a program does not meet the requirements in the state or territory in which you are located, please contact Sarah Cheverton, JMU’s State Authorization and Compliance Officer for Online Learning: cheverse@jmu.edu or 540.568.5321.
