Program Overview
As a graduate of the JMU Nursing Program you will be prepared to practice as a registered nurse to provide nursing care to clients in a variety of settings. The program has a strong positive reputation among our stakeholders. JMU graduates perform well on the state licensure exam and have a wide choice of career options. Graduates move quickly into positions of responsibility and leadership. Attributes of the BSN Program include the following:
- The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at James Madison University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
- Fully approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing
- Leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
- Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
- Cohorts of 113 students and a low (<1:10) faculty to student ratio
Deadline for Change or Declaration of Majors
- Summer - March 1
- Fall - March 1
- Spring - October 1 of the previous year
Change of major requests received after the deadline will be processed the following semester. Students changing their major to Nursing after March 1 of their sophomore year should expect an additional semester(s) to complete the program. The number of additional semesters required to complete the program will depend on the timing of the change to Nursing and the number of summer courses completed.
The first step for changing your major is to log into MyMadison and visit your Student Center. In the “Other Academic…” dropdown menu you should find options for adding and dropping a major. Once you have completed this process, you will need to schedule an appointment with Anna Cho, Academic advisor for the School of Nursing, also through MyMadison.
**Please note that to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program you must be a full-time student at James Madison University and meet all admission requirements and prerequisites as stated on the BSN website.
In the BSN program, students gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to practice nursing. Learning takes place in a variety of settings and students are prepared to make clinical decisions in "real life" scenarios. The School of Nursing values innovative instruction in the classroom, skills laboratory, practicum, and simulation environment. A low professor to student ratio, a faculty open-door policy and close working relationships with faculty help students to develop their full personal and professional potential. You will be assigned a faculty adviser who will be available to assist you with program planning, problem solving and career exploration.
