Mission Statement
University Advising is dedicated to empathetic, authentic, and inclusive approaches that support students to access essential information and pursue their educational goals. Our work is a partnership with students that empowers them to take the lead in planning and navigating their own education.
What is Academic Advising?
Academic Advising is a collaborative process in which students and advisors work together to develop educational plans and promote academic success. However, the ultimate responsibility of selecting courses, meeting requirements and following policies and procedures lies with the student, not the advisor.

Prospective Nursing Students
How to Change Your Major to Nursing
The first step for changing your major is to log into MyMadison and visit your Student Center. In the “Other Academic…” dropdown menu you should find options for adding and dropping a major. Once you have completed this process, you will need to schedule an appointment with Anna Cho, Academic advisor for the School of Nursing, also through MyMadison.
Deadline for Change or Declaration of Majors
- Summer - February 15
- Fall - February 15
- Spring - September 15 of the previous year
Change of major requests received after the deadline will be processed the following semester. Students changing their major to health sciences after February 15 of the sophomore year should expect an additional semester(s) to complete the program. The number of additional semesters required to complete the program will depend on the timing of the change to health sciences and the number of summer courses completed
**Please note that to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program you must be a full-time student at James Madison University and meet all admission requirements and prerequisites as stated on the BSN website.
