Transfer Pathways for this Major

The B.S. in Industrial Design requires significant coursework that is only offered at JMU, so you may want to consider planning to transfer after one year.

You should choose courses at your current school that satisfy specific general education AND major requirements at JMU. Use the list of equivalent courses in this major major for course guidance so you can prepare for the portfolio review that will be part of your transfer application process.

In addition, to be considered a competitive student for admission, you should have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and successfully completed college course work in these core subject areas: English, mathematics, social science and lab science.

If you are hoping to complete an associate degree prior to transfer, you should anticipate three years at JMU to complete the B.S. in Industrial Design.

 

For the B.S. in Industrial Design, it can be beneficial to transfer to JMU after one year of community college.

Additional Notes:

  • Students must submit a portfolio of their work in order to be considered for admission to the program. See the department's website for review dates and more information on the portfolio. 
  • Please Note: INDU 200 is the gateway course into the major and is only offered in the fall semester. Students accepted to the major who transfer in the spring will not be able to take major courses until the following fall semester. The prerequisites for INDU are FDS 102, 104 and 106 (see above for VCCS and RBC equivalents).
  • There is an additional admission process for industrial design. INDU 208 - Portfolio Review, is a 0 credit, pass/fail course that functions as a prerequisite to enrollment in all upper-level industrial design courses.
