Major Guide for Transfer Advising

Transfer Pathways for this Major
  • View the B.A. Earth Science Transfer Guide, which shows the courses to take at your community college for the best 2-year plus 2-year pathway to your major at JMU.

If you are earning a transferable associate degree from VCCS or Richard Bland other than the degree listed in the transfer guide above, your time to graduation may or may not be impacted. You will still qualify for the general education waiver at JMU. In addition, you may want to consider following the guidance for equivalent courses in this major.

You should choose courses at your current school that satisfy specific general education AND major requirements at JMU. In addition, to be considered a competitive student for admission, you should have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and successfully completed college course work in these core subject areas: English, mathematics, social science and lab science.

Equivalent Courses for this Major:

The following courses can help toward your major at JMU. The list below shows all possible courses offered that fulfill requirements towards this major. Not all courses may be offered at your community college, and you are not required to complete these courses in order to transfer. We recommend meeting with a JMU Next Transfer Advisor as you schedule courses at your community college.

Advising Notes:

  • Students need an additional math course (6 credits total). It can be any transferable math.

Additional courses required for the JMU B.A. degree:

  • PHI 100 or PHI 200 at VCCS | PHIL 101 at RBC
  • Complete world language (or demonstrate proficiency through JMU's placement exam) through the intermedate 202 level at VCCS or RBC.

Additional courses for students pursuing teacher licensure in Earth Science:

  • PSY 230 at VCCS | PSY 250 at RBC
  • EDU 200 at VCCS | EDUC 200 at RBC

Additional Notes:

  • The ideal pathway from VCCS to this major is the A.S. in Environmental Science (consult the B.A. Earth Science Transfer Guide). If your community college doesn't offer an A.S. in Environmental Science, you may complete the A.S. Science with the appropriate math and science courses listed on the B.A. Earth Science Transfer Guide.
  • Students seeking teacher licensure in earth science must also complete the pre-professional secondary education program that leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree (5-year program). All education students must apply and be admitted to Teacher Education. See the admission requirements and use the links below to learn more about the application process.
