Libraries Frequently Asked Questions

Four! Rose Library is on East Campus, and it has STEM and business books. Carrier Library is near the quad, and has humanities books, including Special Collections (our rare, fragile, or JMU-related books). The Music Library is in the basement of the Music Building, and it has sheet music and audio material. The Educational Technology & Media Center (ETMC) is located in Memorial Hall and has children's and education-related books.

Yes! Our buildings are spacious and popular, and there is a spot for you and your preferred study environment. You’ll find quiet and cozy nooks, open and bright tables, cafe spaces, and even private carrels and single-person booths. There are also plenty of group study rooms featuring large tables, whiteboards, and even flat panel TVs to practice presentations. P.S. There is a Starbucks in both Rose and Carrier Libraries, so people come in for their caffeine fix, too.

Of course we do! We have thousands of books across our four buildings, including really obscure textbooks, comic books, graphic novels and current, popular fiction and non-fiction. If you're not a book person, we even have thousands of DVDs – we're talkin' all the Star Wars, all the Avengers, and every season of Game of Thrones.

Yes! There is a librarian for each major. They understand the types of research and assignments that “their” majors need to do. Say you're an education major with a huge psychology paper to finish. You can make an appointment with the psychology librarian or education librarian to help you out! They can meet online, in person, over the phone, and even video chat.

You can request anything you need through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Whether you need a book, a specific article, a DVD, or even a CD, ILL is able to borrow an item for you from libraries all over the world.

Yes! We subscribe to a huge number of online databases, including JSTOR, The New York Times, Kanopy, PubMed, and so many more. We also carry all the major style guides and citation managers, and our librarians are always able to help facilitate your research!

It sure is. Using the FLEX money on your JACard, you can send your documents to our black and white or color printers for only a few cents a page. We also have high-quality scanners that will send documents directly to your email or the printers. Your JACard is also your library card.

Yes! At the end of the fall and spring semesters, the Libraries hosts a "De-Stress for Success" program that spans the entire week of finals. We offer relaxing activities like coloring and puzzles, we bring in snacks, and we let therapy dogs visit for a little study break!

The Makery is what we call our makerspaces. We have one in the basement of Carrier Library and another on the first floor of Rose Library. These makerspaces contain so much equipment for creativity, like 3D printers, a Glowforge laser cutter, sewing machines, the full Adobe software suite, virtual reality, and even narration rooms for recording. Our expert employees are always available to help you learn this equipment and assist in your projects. Free Makery workshops are offered weekly!

Of course we do! In addition to the Makery workshops, the Libraries also hosts MadLab classes taught by student instructors on topics like PhotoShop, Illustrator, Wix website creation, video editing, and more. Throughout the year, the Libraries hosts awesome speakers, has monthly book displays and exhibits, and offers surprise activities just for students!
