Welcome to the Honors College

This is where it all begins.

We are excited that you will be joining the JMU Honors College. You will interact with equally curious learners from across the entire campus and be part of lively and productive discussions. We look forward to learning more about you and what you will add to the Honors community.

Welcome from Dean Bradley Newcomer

We are now into the summer months and quickly approaching the start of fall semester. This is a time of new beginnings, exciting changes, and grand hopes for the future. Move-in and orientation activities with our incoming freshman students are just around the corner. At the time of writing this message, we are on target to welcome a class of 230 new freshmen to the Honors College. Each of these students brings unique experiences and backgrounds to the Honors College community. Exciting times are ahead and we look forward to journeying with you as you grow. I want to wish everyone a new academic year filled with meaningful relationships, interesting classes, incredible personal growth, and an enduring quest for academic excellence and lifelong learning. Remember to be safe and to be kind to each other. Here’s to making this an incredible summer and academic year for all!

All the best,

Bradley R. Newcomer, PhD, MBA
Dean of the Honors College
Professor of Physics

Summer Springboard

Summer Springboard is an important event. During JMU’s Summer Springboard, you will learn about becoming a JMU student and how to best prepare yourself for the first day on campus. You are required to attend Honors Springboard.

Honors Springboard sessions will be held in-person on the following dates:

June 28, 29, 30
July 1, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20

Virtual Springboard sessions will be:

July 15 and 21

All in-person Springboard sessions are from 8:00-8:30 a.m. in the Atlantic Union Bank Center Multipurpose Room. Because Honors sessions are “invitation only,” they are not on the general Orientation schedule nor are they listed on your Springboard registration. In addition to notifying you here, watch the Honors social media feed and your email for Springboard reminders.

If you are planning to attend the virtual Springboard days: the Honors sessions will be held via Zoom on July 15 and 21 from 11:20 - 11:50 a.m. The Zoom log-in will be shared with you via email.

Academic Advising

As you prepare to enroll in classes for your first semester at JMU, please check out this video for information about enrolling in Honors classes.

You can view a list of fall semester Honors classes here.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Enroll in a 1-credit section of HON 100 (required).
  • Enroll in a 3- or 4-credit Honors course, probably an Honors General Education course such as SCOM 123H or BIO 140H (strongly encouraged).
  • If an Honors General Education course does not work for you, have a look at HON 200 seminars, or an Honors diversity course that is also in the General Education program.
  • *Note: If you are interested in the HON 200 seminar “Intergroup Dialogue on Race as a Social Identity,” please complete this application as soon as possible.
  • Unable to fit one of these classes into your schedule? No big deal. You’ll have time in future semesters to move forward with Honors coursework.
  • If HON 100 will push you to 18 credits, contact honors-advising@jmu.edufor an override to increase to 18 credits.

We anticipate you will work most closely with your assigned First Year Advisor through the summer, but if you have any Honors-specific questions, please contact Jared Diener, the academic advisor in the Honors College.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most questions can be answered in the One Book – we recommend starting there!

Move In and Honors Orientation

Honors students will be moving in at the same time as all other JMU students beginning on Saturday, August 21. Any questions related to move-in should be directed to the Office of Residence Life. More information about Honors Orientation activities will be emailed to incoming students in July.

Be sure to save the date and plan to attend the Freshman Picnic on Thursday, August 26 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on the Hillcrest House lawn. This will be a great opportunity to meet new Honors friends!

Common Theme

During the 2021-2022 academic year, the Honors College will explore a theme of resilience. Honors will offer a variety of student programs relating to the common theme, and faculty plan to include critical examinations of resilience in their Honors seminars. We look forward to having productive conversations with you about the many facets of resilience. We will explore different disciplinary notions of resilience, its benefits, as well as systemic challenges and inequalities which create conditions requiring resilience in the first place.

Major Mixers

Major Mixers are some of the many awesome Honors student programs you can look forward to this fall. Check out your June newsletter for more information. Honors has a dedicated GroupMe already set up for each of the Major Mixer areas. This page provides a quick reference for all Major Mixer GroupMe links.
