Audiology

Leanne Browning, Audiology, represented James Madison University at the Council of Southern Graduate Schools Regional Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas on February 24, 2018. She presented her dissertation on “Audiologist’s Preferences in Programming Cochlear Implants: A Preliminary Report.”

Paris Atabek (2nd year Au.D.) was awarded the American Academy of Audiology Student Research Grant for her research “Effects of Age and Middle Ear Resonance on the Frequency Tuning of the cVEMP and oVEMP”. Dr. Erin Piker was her mentor.

Logan Faust (3rd year Au.D.) currently in her third year Au.D. program, received the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship.

Harley Wheeler (2nd year Au.D.) was selected for one of the prestigious NIH sponsored T-35 training programs. Harley, a second year Au.D. student, will be working with researchers at Boys Town National Research Hospital this summer in the area of Cochlear Implants.

Biology

Sarah McGrath, a student in the M.S. in Biology program, won First Place in the Three Minute Thesis Competition and the People's Choice Award, for her presentation, “Exploring the Microbiome: Diversity of the Microbial Community of Three Foam Nesting Frogs” January 2018

Jonathan Studio received a Runner-Up Award at the Three Minute Thesis Competition for his thesis; “Competition and Predation: Interactions between American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Virginia Mountain Streams”. January 2018

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Jean Fabrice Ndzana was awarded Runner-Up in the Three Minute Thesis Competition for his presentation; “Neuroscience Factors for Adolescent Psychotherapy”. January 2018

Communication Sciences & Disorders

Leanne Browning finished Second Place in the Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT), at which she presented; “Audiologist’s Preferences in Programming Cochlear Implants: A Preliminary Report”. She was mentored by Dr. YingjiuNie and Dr. Ayasakanta Rout. (January 2018) In addition to her success at the 3MT competition, Leanne’s research has also been selected as a featured presentation at the American Cochlear Implant Alliance (ACAI) conference in Washington, DC.

Kami Kubler (2nd year M.S. in SLP) also received the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation Graduate Student Scholarship. Overall, JMU students received two out of the 20 coveted scholarships this year.

Danika Pfeiffer (Ph.D. candidate) won Third Place at the James Madison University Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition. Her presentation, mentored by Dr. Stacey Pavelko, was on “Interprofessional Collaboration Targeting Language and Emergent Literacy”. (January 2018) She was the recipient of a Student Engagement Mini Grant and a Graduate School Travel Grant to present research at Collaboration Across Borders VI Conference, Banff, Alberta, Canada (October 2017). Danika has presented her poster at this conference and given a one-hour oral seminar at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Annual Convention, entitled “Interprofessional Collaborative Practice in Schools: A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists”. She has also published a manuscript in collaboration with Dr. Carol Dudding on “Clinical Decision-Making in Speech-Language Pathology Students: Quantitative Findings”, Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders, 2(1), 1-11

Beth Nottingham was invited to present at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Baltimore, MD, in both; “Oral Mechanism Exams: What the SLP Needs to Know”, and  (with Dr. E. Schultz)  “Eating the Rainbow: Addressing Feeding Problems in Children with Autism”. She has published (with Dr. Carol Dudding); “A National Survey of Simulation Use in University Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders” in American Journal of Speech-Language…, 27 (February), 1-11. 

Erin Clinard presented, along with Dr. Cynthia O’Donoghue and Beth Nottingham; “Dysphagia Management for Infants and children: The Ins & Outs of Evaluation”, and “Dysphagia Management for Infants and Children: The Ins & Outs of Intervention” at The Speech-Hearing Association of Virginia Annual Conference, Richmond, Virginia. Erin also took part in two refereed poster presentations; “Simulations and Transfer of Learning” and “Computer-Based Clinical Simulation: Student Perceptions and Implications for Graduate Education”, at The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention, Los Angeles, California. 2017

Lindsay Griffin presented with Dr. Erin Kamarunas and Dr. Christy Ludlow; “Home Use of Vibratory Stimulation for Retraining in Patients with Chronic Dysphagia”, at the Annual Convention of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, Los Angeles, CA.

Education

Molly Knudsen co-authored an article with Dr. Keri Bethune entitled "Manifestation Determinations: An Interdisciplinary Guide to Best-Practices." in the journal TEACHING Exceptional Children.

Education Technology

Owen Longacre developed a series of heuristics and a critical guidebook as an outcome of his applied research project invovling instructional design and culture. This was in direct support of the collaborative online international learning offorts of ESD Innovate, a team of faculty from James Madison University, Zurich University, University of Capetown, Uppsala University, and Western Washington University.

Taylor Kahny conducted a study that measured the engagement indices of arousal and valence in order to reflect learning in the affective domain during an online asynchronous course module. She triangulated data through the use of three neuro/physiological devices - electroencephalography (EEG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and eye tracking.

Alissa Cruz presented “Breaking the Chains of Time, Black Womanhood in Twelve Years a Slave,” at the 18th Annual EGSA conferences, "All Road Lead to Rome, " in North Carolina.

Alissa Cruz presented “Love Tokens in Othello, Female Power and Magic” at the Annual College English Association Conference in St. Petersburg, FL.

Karisa Harris-Cleary received the ARIEL award for best paper at the Third Biannual Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama Conference at James Madison University for “''Tearing Down the Temple, Even with the Earth': The Queer Ecology of Joyn Lyly's Gallathea” She also presented the paper at the College of English Association Conference in St. Petersburg, FL.

Karisa Harris-Cleary presented “Temporal Interregnum in the Anthropocene: Futurity and Colson Whitehead's Zone One” at the UNC-Charlotte EGSA Conference.

Austin Shifflett presented "Virginia Woolf's Spectral Ecology"” at UNC-Charlotte ESGA Conference.

Austin Shifflett presented "The Mental Geography of Hell in Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and John Milton's Paradise Lost"” at the College English Association Conference in St. Petersburg, FL.

A second-year student Austin Shifflett, while working as a GA in the library's special collections, has produced an exhibit of archival materials entitled "Black and White on Bluestone Hill: JMU's Racial History in the Archives." It's on display the second floor of Carrier Library, outside the special collections reading room.

Mitchell Teal presented "Temporal Abridgements in the Film 12 Years a Slave” at the College English Association Conference in St. Petersburg, FL.

Music Education

K. Denise Schulz was a Runner-Up in the Three Minute Thesis Competition after presenting, “Life Enrichment and Healthful Well-being through Senior Adult Singing” January 2018

Occupational Therapy

On October 13-15, second year Occupational Therapy students participated in the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association conference in Portsmouth, VA.  JMU’s program had an impressive presence at the conference as Dukes networked, presented research and even claimed both the prestigious VOTA Scholarship and the Educator of the Year award.

Each year, VOTA selects one student to receive their statewide scholarship. Christie Brinkley, who designed the logo for the conference, earned the prestigious award. The Educator of the Year Award went to Dr. Twylla Kirchen, an OT professor. October 2017.  More information.

Physician Assistant

Blake Rogers was named the National PA Student of the Year by the American Academy of Physician Assistants in New Orleans, LA in May 2018.

Psychological Sciences

Paulius Satkus, a first year student in the Quantitative Psychology concentration in the Psychological Sciences master's program, received the “Best Student Paper Award” from the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Measurement and Assessment in Higher Education Special Interest Group (SIG). This award is targeted to graduate students studying in the field of assessment in higher education and is awarded to a graduate student author with an exemplary paper within the SIG.  More information.

Graduate psychology student Jean Fabrice Ndzana and graduate psychology professor Ken Critchfield joined a groundbreaking research project headed by Lindsey Harvell-Bowman, in which they will study suicidality from a new perspective. November 2017 More information

In December of 2017, students from the Experimental Psychology concentration presented two posters at the 15,000 strong Society for Neuroscience conference in Washington, DC. In addition, JMU Psych Sciences students met up with recent graduates who are now in PhD programs. Several JMU Dept of Psychology undergraduates also attended and helped present with their graduate student mentors. Lots of science!

School Psychology

Mandi Simmers received the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year Award from the Virginia Acadmeny of School Psychologists.

The School of Psychology program reported that 100% of their students passed the PRAXIS certification exam and that all recent alumni are employed by schools divisions.

Strategic Leadership

Jim Krauss, student of the Organizational Science and Leadership concentration, served as a panelist in the Madison Vision Series Panel: The Impact of the Affordable Care Act in early November. Jim has more than 30 years of executive leadership experience in healthcare and served as president of Sentara RMH Medical Center and corporate vice-president of Sentara Healthcare prior to retiring from his positions to pursue the Strategic Leadership Program. Other panel members included William A. Hazel Jr. (Secretary of Health and Human Resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia), Michael M. Dudley. (President of Optima Health and a Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare), and Eric Major (President, CEO and Co-Founder of K2M, Inc.). Watch the panel November 2017

Ahmet Shala has played a key role in establishing JMU's relationship with Kosovo, and recently accompanied President Alger, JMU faculty, and administrators on a visit to Kosovo to meet with leaders from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and public and private institutions. Organizational Science and Leadership students Tiffany Brutus and Adam Lindberg are serving as members of the Working Group on Student Campus Climate as part of the JMU Task Force on Inclusion! 

Nick Swayne's case study "The Virginia Drones Project" was published in the Council on Undergraduate Research's Case Studies in Innovation and Collaboration! The case study focuses on JMU's UAV (drone) class where undergraduate students form cross-disciplinary teams prototype solutions to real-world challenges using UAVs. Nick, along with, Juhong Christie Liu, and Andrea Adams presented; “Design for Deep Learning through Facilitating an Entrepreneurial Mindset: A Review from the Activity System Perspective”  June 2017 Summer International Research Symposium.
