Organization Name:
University of Kansas
Organization Type:
Academic
Mission Statement:
The Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Lab (RSL) joined ITTC in the fall of 1998. Since 1964, RSL has been: exploring new ways to use electromagnetic waves in the remote sensing of the land (surface and subsurface), sea, polar ice and the atmosphere; producing new remote sensing sensors (primarily radar); developing new methods for solving electromagnetic problems; and, in the process, educating engineers and future leaders in the area of radars, microwaves, communications and remote sensing techniques for the 21st century. To accomplish these goals, a broad range of laboratory activities are involved, including: the design, construction and testing of specialty radar systems with operating frequencies ranging from radio frequencies through the microwave and millimeter waves (100 MHz to 100 GHz); the collection of sensor data to be compared with the physical parameters of the scene; developing models from electromagnetic theory as well as physical models of the scene to explain / interpret the sensor's sensitivity to the parameters of interest; and documenting the findings, publishing the results, and sharing the data with other scientists and engineers internationally. RSL has made significant contributions in many areas of remote sensing, they include: - ocean remote sensing: monitoring the surface wind velocity and direction, precipitation events, the extent of sea ice, and estimating the sea state from microwave sensors, in support of global climate studies as well as improved weather prediction capabilities. - atmospheric remote sensing: estimating precipitation rates and distribution, cloud heights and thickness, wind velocities, in support of global climate studies as well as improved weather prediction capabilities. - sea-ice remote sensing: detecting the presence of sea ice, discrimination of thin (first-year) ice from the more hazardous (multi-year) ice, categorizing the ice into its numerous classifications, in support of maritime commerce and global climate studies. - remote sensing of polar ice: measuring the thickness of the polar ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, mapping the topography of the underlying bedrock, characterizing outlet glaciers in terms of channel thickness and ice velocity, all in support of global climate studies. - ground-probing radar: detecting and mapping subsurface features (both man-made and naturally occurring), detecting buried utilities, the presence and extent of pollutants (both solid and liquid), primarily in support of the utilities and environmental remediation.
