CISR-GMAR: NGO Committee on Disarmament
Organization Name:
NGO Committee on Disarmament
Organization Type:
NGO/INGO
Mission Statement:
For more than 20 years, the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Committee on Disarmament, an independent tax-exempt private voluntary organization based at the United Nations in New York, has provided services and facilities to the hundreds of citizens' groups concerned with the peace and disarmament activities of the United Nations. Because of its distinguished efforts as conference organizer, network clearinghouse, newspaper publisher and year-round U.N. liaison, the NGO Committee on Disarmament is regarded as a primary ally of the international movement for arms control, peace and disarmament, and the continuing body designated to serve this worldwide constituency. The NGO Committee on Disarmament is one of the Committees of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO). The NGO Committee on Disarmament has a crucial and expanding responsibility to inform NGOs worldwide of the status of negotiations, country positions, major obstacles and opportunities, and to help NGOs transmit their expertise and creative proposals to the appropriate decision-making fora. To fulfill these important responsibilities, the NGO Committee has five major program areas: NGO coordination, disarmament times, forums and conferences, international networking, and disarmament education and internships.
