Activity description

Share a short 10-minute presentation with participants. Next, invite small groups to independently prepare a 3-minute presentation on the key points from your presentation for a specific audience such as 7-year-old children, engineers, or volunteers. 

Debrief Questions

  1. What listening strategies helped your group identify the most important points from the presentation?
  2. How did your team decide what information to include or leave out when tailoring the message for a specific audience?
  3. What challenges did you encounter when translating information for an audience with different knowledge or experiences?
  4. How did active listening contribute to your group's ability to accurately communicate the original message?
  5. Why is it important to adapt communication to the needs and perspectives of different audiences, professions, or disciplines?
  6. How can the skills practiced in this activity improve communication and collaboration in interprofessional or interdisciplinary teams?

What is one strategy you can use to better tailor your communication to different audiences in future team interactions?
