About the Program
The Office of Strategic Initiatives and Global Affairs is hosting Be A Part of the Change on September 15-16, 2024.
This one-day experience is a program designed for scholars underrepresented in their field of practice and/or research expertise (who are pursuing a career in academia) to learn about James Madison University’s award-winning departments and programs of study.
Be A Part of the Change invites scholars to the James Madison University campus to participate in an experience designed to cultivate skills in teaching, research, technology and grant writing. Scholars will have the opportunity to:
- Attend lightning talks presented by award winning JMU professors
- Learn about the JMU campus and scholarly expectations
- Present their research agenda to chairs, deans and potential hiring committees

Program Highlights
- Paid travel for scholars to visit the JMU campus overnight.
- Deliver a presentation of a scholarly research agenda.
- Take advantage of the opportunity to meet with administrators to hear the institutional vision and strategic plan to help scholars see themselves within the vision.
- Meet with departmental chairs, deans, shared equity leaders and faculty members from departments that correlate with the scholar’s area of expertise.
How Do I Qualify?
- Be a member underrepresented within field of practice/or research expertise.
- Have an interest in academia.
- Must complete requirements for a terminal degree by December 2024.
- Submit a complete application by August 1, 2024, including a cover letter, research statement, teaching philosophy and statement of interest.
