Carolyn received an Associate of Arts from Pellissippi State Technical Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The University of Tennessee, and a Master in Research Administration (MRA) from the University of Central Florida.

Carolyn came to James Madison University in 2003 and worked in the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration for ten years. In May 2013, Carolyn was charged with the responsibility of creating the Office of Research Integrity where she now serves as the Director.

Carolyn is a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) and a Certified IRB Manager (CIM) with many years of experience in higher education research compliance. She also serves on numerous compliance committees and task forces. Carolyn is responsible for the oversight of compliance in the areas involving human subject research (IRB), animal subject research (IACUC), biosafety research (IBC), lab safety, financial conflict of interest, responsible conduct of research, and export controls related to research at JMU.
