MREST Make-Up sessions have concluded as of June 9 for summer 2016. If you we not able to complete the MREST by the March 3rd, April 29, or June 9 deadlines, you must wait until August 29 when the testing center reopens to make another attempt. There will be no exceptions.

How do I study for the MREST?
The link above contains information on where to find additional help and study material. However, if you are having trouble finding the link, the study material for the MREST is called the Madison Research Essentials Toolkit.
Where do I take the MREST?
The MREST is administered at the Assessment & Testing Center in the basement of Ashby Hall.
Do I need an appointment?
No, the MREST is administed on a walk-in basis during normal business hours. Check in with the assistant on duty on arrival and you will be seated immediately.
How many times can I take the MREST per day?
Students can only take the MREST once per business day. If you take the MREST at 1:00pm on Tuesday, you cannot take it again on Tuesday, but you can come back at 9:00am Wednesday and re-take it.
What should I bring with me?
The only material you will need and are allowed is your JMU Access Card (JAC). You will need your JAC for testing center access and for test administration. Students without a JAC cannot take the MREST.
What is the deadline for the MREST?
The MREST is due on the Friday before Spring Break each year.
The MREST deadline has passed, can I still take it?
Yes, passing the deadline only results in an information hold on your account.
I have a hold on my account because I did not complete the MREST, can I still take it?
YES! An information hold only affects your ability to register for classes, receive your diploma or receive your official transcript. It does not affect your ability to take the MREST.
I PASSED THE MREST! How long before my hold is released?
Due to system limitations, all MREST scores are manually updated. Please allow 1-2 business days (i.e. Monday-Friday) for the hold to be removed.
Can I have my cell phone during the test?
ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF BEFORE ARRIVING IN THE TESTING CENTER. Students with their phones visible during any test in the testing center may be asked to end their test and leave. Students using their phone during a test will be asked to leave and may be reported to the Honor Council.
Is the MREST timed?
No, students have as much time as they need to complete the test.
How long is the test?
The MREST takes on average 45 minutes to complete. Exam time depends on the individual. Please note that our test must be completed before the testing center closes at 5pm. Assistants are instructed to turn students away at 4:15pm to ensure all admited students complete the test by 5pm.
What score do I need to pass?
A score of Proficient (148) is required to pass.
Help! I've taken the MREST multiple times and haven't passed. What do I do?
Students having difficulty passing the MREST can seek additional assistance from the Communication Center on the first floor of the Student Success Center.You can schedule an appointment by going to the Communication Center's appoinment page
The testing center will close at 5pm on April 28, 2016 for summer break. We will reopen on Monday August 29, 2016. There will be four MREST and Assessment Day Make-up days during Maymester (one per week). Dates and location will be released prior to finals week.
