Adding Printers Using TCP/IP in Windows 8

The following steps illustrate how to install a JMU-owned network printer on your computer using TCP/IP in Windows 8. In order to complete the steps you will need to log in to an administrator account on the computer and know details such as the printer model and IP address. Please contact the Information Technology Help Desk at (540) 568-3555 if you are unable to determine this information.

  1. If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.  If you're using a touch screen, swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

  2. Type Advanced Printer Setup in the search box, click or tap Settings, and then click or tap Advanced Printer Setup.

  3. Click or tap The printer that I want isn't listed.

  5. Click or tap the bullet which says Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname.

  7. Click Next

  8. In the Hostname or IP Address field enter the IP Address for the printer you are adding
    Instuctions for looking up your IP Address (authentication required)
  9. Enter IP Address

  10. Click Next and if prompted enter your administrator credentials

  11. If prompted choose the driver that corresponds to your printer model (or click the Have Disk button to search for downloaded drivers) and click Next.  If prompted click or tap the bullet beside Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended) and click Next.

  12. Take note of the name given to the printer

  13. Click Next

  14. Make sure the bullet is selected beside Do not share this printer

  15. Click Next

  16. Click to put a check mark beside of Set as the default printer (if you do wish to make it your default printer)

  17. Click the Print a test page button (if you wish to do so)

  18. Click Finish. Your printer should now be set up and ready to use.
