Subscribing to Departmental Mailbox Folders in Email

Note:  Speed performance improvements to the email system on 1/9/09 removed the capability to subscribe to departmental mailboxes through Webmail and IMAP clients (Outlook, Mac Mail, etc.), as well as limited or removed the capability to view departmental mailboxes in those IMAP clients (details under each client below).

Web Browser Supported Client

Windows Recommended e-mail IMAP Client

Macintosh Recommended e-mail IMAP Client

Not Supported e-mail IMAP Clients

Webmail
Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 did not impact existing departmental mailbox folder subscribers through Webmail.  However, if you un-subscribe(d) from a departmental mailbox, you will not be able to re-subscribe to that folder without intervention from the Information Technology Department.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or un-subscribed departmental mailboxes.

See Shared Departmental Folders in Webmail (steps 6 - 18 to view a subscribed departmental mailbox folder).

Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 did not impact existing departmental mailbox folder subscribers through Outlook.  The email changes do prevent those that un-subscribe(d) to departmental mailboxes or those requesting a new departmental mailbox from accessing their departmental e-mail through Outlook (the workaround is to access departmental e-mail through Webmail after completing a Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes).

Leopard Mail

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 prevent access to departmental mailbox folders through Leopard and OSX Mail.  The workaround is to access departmental e-mail through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

OSX Mail

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 prevent access to departmental mailbox folders through Leopard and OSX Mail.  The workaround is to access departmental email through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

Entourage 2004 (Detailed Instructions also available)

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 may have prevented access to departmental mailbox folders through unsupported IMAP clients.  The workaround is to access departmental email through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

  1. Open Entourage - select your JMU/IMAP account.
  2. In the right-hand pane Expand request folder.
  3. Select the department folder you want to subscribe to and Click the Subscribe button at the top (or Click Subscribe from the Edit Menu).
  4. The newly subscribed folder should appear below INBOX under your JMU/IMAP account.

Outlook Express 5 and 6
Note: Outlook Express is unable to view departmental email folders. Please use another IMAP client or Webmail to access departmental folders.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

Netscape 4.7x

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 may have prevented access to departmental mailbox folders through unsupported IMAP clients.  The workaround is to access departmental email through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

  • Departmental Mailboxes should show up automatically in the folders list

Netscape 6.0 or 7.0

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 may have prevented access to departmental mailbox folders through unsupported IMAP clients.  The workaround is to access departmental email through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.

  • Departmental Mailboxes should show up automatically in the folders list

Eudora 5.2

Note:  Speed performance improvement changes to the email system on 1/9/09 may have prevented access to departmental mailbox folders through unsupported IMAP clients.  The workaround is to access departmental email through Webmail.  Please complete the Departmental Mailbox Request for new, changes to, deletion of, or subscription to new or unsubscribed departmental mailboxes.
