Elizabeth Wislar is a Multi-Award Winning Costume Professional, a Large Scale Textile and Integrated Technology Artist, a Wage Equity Warrior, Instructor, and registered member of the Northern Cherokee Nation.

Elizabeth spent close to twenty years as a freelance theatre artisan based in Chicago, IL. She has designed over 250 shows and built more than 150 productions in the Chicago area and nationally in collaboration with many of the prevailing theaters, opera companies and local universities. Elizabeth graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, and earned an MFA in Costume Design and Technology from Pennsylvania State University. She spent 5 years (1996-1999, 2002) as the Assistant Designer/Head Draper for the annual Baroque Handel Opera Festival in Göttingen, Germany. Elizabeth is the 2004 recipient of the Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award, as well as multiple other awards and nominations. In 2011, she founded Chicago Custom Costumes, a private build shop located in the historic Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago.

In 2015, Elizabeth sold her business to begin her career in academia. She aspires to train and develop new artistic collaborators and technicians, preparing them for a multitude of diverse opportunities. Elizabeth joined the James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance community in the Fall of 2020.
