JMU is currently monitoring recent changes to the Virignia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP). Please visit the DVS website for additional information. Once guidance is released, we will post it here.

The Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP) provides educational assistance, for a maximum of 8 semesters of tuition and fees, to spouses and children of military service members killed, missing in action, taken prisoner, or who became at least 90 percent disabled as a result of military service in an armed conflict.

TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE VMSDEP PROGRAM, visit the Virginia Department of Veterans Services website or contact:

Phone: (804) 786-0571
Fax: (804)-786-0809
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

JMU does not apply VMSDEP waivers retroactively. Eligible waivers are applied to current and/or future terms as determined by DVS. Student's name must be on the semester roster in the VMSDEP portal by the last day of the current term in order for the waiver to be applied to that term.

Follow their application deadline guidelines to ensure you are approved for the semester you want to start the benefit.

VMSDEP and Financial Aid Impact:

As a state veterans’ benefit, the VMSDEP will be included as a financial resource in your overall financial aid package (the waiver does not appear on the financial aid offer) and may reduce state grants, university grants or scholarships, federal loans, federal work-study, and private loans. Since each financial aid offer type is unique, the VMSDEP benefit may affect each person's financial aid offer differently. Contact the JMU Financial Aid office with any questions regarding your specific situation: or 540-568-7820.
