Signing Up for Summer Springboard

Does it matter what day I attend Summer Springboard?

Yes. Summer Springboard is major-specific; therefore, date availability will be based on your declared major submitted through the "My Orientation Reservation" step. Your date is automatically held, once your reservation is complete; a confirmation email is sent to your JMU email account. It is important to attend the date you confirm so we may provide you programming and advising based on your major and submitted information.

What if I am unable to attend Summer Springboard?

Students are expected to attend Summer Springboard as it is your opportunity to meet with your freshman advisor, ask questions, and finalize your fall class enrollment. It is a full day of opportunities for you and your family to discover everything JMU offers. If you are unable to attend please check the "unable to attend" bullet found on the "My Orientation Reservation" step.

Even if you are not able to attend Summer Springboard you should still go to the One Book website and complete all the steps by the stated deadlines. This information is crucial for enrollment at JMU.

DISCLAIMER: Students who do not attend Summer Springboard will not have another opportunity during the summer to meet with their academic advisor or finalize their fall class enrollment. No changes may be made to class schedules until 1787 August Orientation.

Please note that all incoming student accounts are billed the $180 Orientation fee, whether or not students attend Summer Springboard.

If I cannot attend a Summer Springboard session, can my parents finalize my fall class schedule for me at Orientation?

Parents and/or family members are encouraged to attend Summer Springboard, even if the student cannot attend. However, parents and/or family members will not be able to finalize class schedules for the student or meet with an advisor. You may add your guests on the "My Orientation Reservation" step on the One Book website and also click Send a Message to inform us of the day your guest will be attending. Please see the information above on students who cannot attend Orientation.

I have already submitted my orientation reservation through The One Book website, but I want to change my major.

You can edit the reservation section to change your declared major through the One Book website until five business days prior to your scheduled orientation date.

The step will lock down five business days prior to the scheduled orientation date; at which time, change of major requests must be sent through the Send a Message navigation at the top of the One Book website. Include your full name, the major selected with your original reservation and the new major you would like to declare, with your request.

  • If you change your major at any time, please return to and complete the Prepare for Class Enrollment step using your new selected major.
  • Next, return to the "My Orientation Reservation" step to change your declared major (and concentration/pre-professional program, if applicable). Click SAVE & CONTINUE to the Orientation Dates task to confirm that your available date options have not changed, then proceed to the SAVE & EXIT RESERVATION when ready.
  • Changing your major may change the availability of Summer Springboard dates, as dates are dependent on your selected major and advisor availability.
  • DO NOT arrive at Orientation on a date that you have not confirmed, as Summer Springboard programming is major-specific.
  • If your request is after May 30, remember to confirm your enrollment appointment through the link provided on the "My Enrollment Appointment" step.
  • If your request is after your scheduled enrollment appointment date, you must wait until Summer Springboard to make changes to your class schedule.

Summer Springboard

What are the dates for Summer Springboard?

Please refer to the Orientation homepage for specific program dates.

How many family members or guests can attend Orientation?

Students are asked to limit their Summer Springboard guests to two.

Do I schedule my fall classes during Summer Springboard?

No. Prior to attending Summer Springboard, you will enroll in your classes based on your printed 1st Semester Enrollment Worksheet. Refer to the One Book steps for further instructions and deadlines.

It is important that you attend Summer Springboard to meet with your advisor for a group advising session and to make any necessary changes to your fall class schedule.

How long will we be on campus for Summer Springboard?

Summer Springboard Orientation is a full day program. Check-in begins at 7:45am (doors open at 7:30am) and the day wraps up around 5:30pm.

I am interested in two majors, which do I declare?

Declare only your primary major of interest on My Orientation Reservation step on The One Book website. Make sure to let your freshman advisor know that you plan on pursuing two majors. Your advisor will help you determine the best time to add a second major.

I am interested in a pre-professional program (such as pre-med or teacher education), what should I do?

Select your desired pre-professional or teacher education program in the pre-professional section on the "My Orientation Reservation" step on The One Book website, under the Declare your Major task list item. If you are interested in the teaching professions use your One Book to ensure you select the correct major.

What if I declare a major that is different from the major I listed on my JMU application?

That's fine! The major you indicate on the My Orientation Reservation step will be your JMU major. Students sometimes change their major from the time they apply for admission to the time they make their Summer Springboard reservation.

However, if you change your major after you submit your reservation or after attending Summer Springboard make sure you follow the specific instructions in the FAQs.
