The Office of Orientation and Transition provides a variety of opportunities for current students to serve JMU by assisting first-year and transfer students in their transition to campus. Peer connection is a powerful means to show an authentic and dynamic view of the JMU community. Student staff contributions give life to our programs and leave impressions on incoming students, guests and one another that last a lifetime.

First yeaR Orientation Guides (FROG)
First yeaR Orientation Guides, or FROGs, are student leaders who play a vital role in welcoming new students and their families to JMU. FROGs serve as mentors, resources, and ambassadors for JMU by supporting new students during Weeks and Welcome and assisting with their transition to university life. Through leadership, teamwork, and service, FROGs help foster a sense of belonging and pride within the JMU community.
Orientation Peer Adviser (OPA)
Applications for the Orientation Peer Adviser (OPA) position will open back up in September 2026.
Orientation Operations Assistant (OOA)
Orientation Operations Assistants (OOAs) play a vital role in the success of Orientation programs. They support incoming students throughout the One Book process and respond to questions from students and families. OOAs work throughout the summer, preparing and organizing materials used during Orientation programming, and staff check-in for Summer Orientation and Weeks of Welcome. Their essential operational support ensures a smooth and welcoming experience and offers valuable hands-on experience for students seeking to build professional office and customer service skills for their résumé.
Applications for 2027 OOAs will open in December 2026.
