Corrective and Supportive Actions

Corrective and Supportive Actions consists of a collection of resources available to supervisors and employees to ensure a productive, safe, respectful and positive work environment.

Employees at JMU are expected, not only, to fulfill their duties as outlined in their position descriptions, but also to conduct themselves in a way that supports the mission, vision and values of the university. When these expectations are not met, supervisors should review and consider supportive or corrective action to address and/or correct the behavior.

Supportive measures includes actions such as the Employee Assistance Program, facilitated conversation, training opportunities, mediation and notice of improvement needed, to name a few. These supportive measures are offered and available in an effort to resolve a conflict, behavior or performance prior to it becoming a consistent problem. If these measures do not result in change, a more formal approach of corrective action may be necessary.

Corrective action, at its core, is an action taken to address behavior or performance that must improve in order for the employee to be successful- and consequently for the employee to contribute to the success of the university. Corrective Actions consist of formal documentation of the behaviors that are kept in the employee's personnel file, to include written notices, suspensions or separation of employment.

JMU supports and utilizes a progressive discipline model to address unsatisfactory performance and behaviors. Progressive discipline is a corrective action process that uses an escalating range of measures for supervisors to inform employees that a performance issue exists and to outline the opportunity for improvement. The purpose is to provide employees with a reasonable opportunity for the employee to improve their behavior or performance, while at the same time providing a fair notice of the consequences for not correcting the issues. The ultimate goal is for the employee to become a fully contributing member of their department and the University.

When tasked with pursuing supportive or corrective measures for an employee, it is important to collaborate with your HR Consultant to determine appropriate actions and seek guidance.
