We engage with poetry in many ways, if we are lucky. Sometimes we encounter the poem on a page. Or we may be fortunate enough to see the poem performed by the poet or in a video. Showcasing the power of voice and description in poetry is key to the mission of The Furious Flower Poetry Center, and each of the poets represented here has spent time in Harrisonburg as part of Furious Flower's programming, and has shared their work with the JMU community, as well as middle and high school students and others in our town. They have also contributed essays to the most recent Furious Flower anthology, Furious Flower: Seeding the Future of African American Poetry. This exhibit offers another opportunity to be in the room with these poems, to feel their presence and to see how the art of the broadside can lift them off the page when we stand, see, and listen to them.
