Class of 2027
Major: ISAT
Grace has always loved science, but never knew what direction she wanted to take it. ISAT was a perfect choice because it allowed her to explore so many different areas and discover her passion. "What I love the most about ISAT is that it allows me to continuously grow and learn more about a variety of subjects, not only the technical knowledge, but the ethics, economics, and other perspectives that help me learn how to think about complex problems. I love how interdisciplinary ISAT is - giving me a chance to learn a little about everything! I also love the small class sizes and the opportunity to grow close to your professors and classmates."
Grace is involved Boarderline, JMU's Ski and Snowboard Club, and Women in Technology. Outside of class, she loves to ski, hike, play intermural sports with her friends and do anything outdoors.
Why did you become an ambassador?
I wanted incoming students to have the same awesome experience I've had here as an ISAT major and to find their passions! ISAT has given me so many opportunities to learn, grow, and explore, and I wanted to share those experiences with prospective students.
Most influential professor, mentor, or advisor
Dr. Spindel was my calculus professor freshman year, and he taught me that learning is impossible without making mistakes. This way of thinking helped me tackle many challenges in and outside the classroom. Now I work with him on the DukeSAT capstone project and volunteer with the Professor in Residence Program, where I lead a robotics team. Dr. Boz also inspired my passion for energy, Dr. Bachman influenced my decision into biotechnology, and Paul Henriksen is always helping us with scheduling!
Favorite spot on campus
I love the arboretum!
Advice for prospective students
Come in with an open mind and explore all that ISAT has to offer-there are so many paths you can choose with ISAT! Talk to your professors and go to office hours if you need help; they are there to support you. Always ask questions- everyone around is willing to help! And don't be afraid to make mistakes, use them as opportunities to learn and grow instead.
