IPEC Domain/Competency
Values and Ethics
Sub-Competencies
VE8 Apply high standards of ethical conduct and quality in contributions to team based care.
TT9 Operate from a shared framework that supports resiliency, well-being, safety, and efficacy.
Goals and objectives
- To familiarize students with their own code of ethics and to determine commonalities and differences in their professional code and that of other professions
Materials
- Interprofessional Ethics Grid Worksheet
- Code of Ethics (each student should bring a copy of their professions code of ethics)
Brief activity/worksheet description
Before the session, students should review their profession's Code of Ethics and come prepared to discuss it with their team members. They should also complete the first column of the comparison grid, focusing on their own profession.
During the session, students will share and compare their completed grids with team members from other disciplines. As they discuss similarities and differences among professional codes of ethics, they will complete the final column of the grid by comparing their profession's code with that of another discipline.
Once the comparison activity is complete, facilitate a debrief and reflection discussion to help students identify key insights and implications for interprofessional collaboration.
Debrief questions
- What did you learn about your own and other professions’ codes of ethics?
- What did you believe before this activity and what do you now understand differently about your discipline, ethics, and interprofessional collaboration?
- How might interprofessional collaboration impact ethical dilemma faced in practice?
Closing Reflection
What is one key takeaway from today's activity and discussion that will shape how you approach ethical decision-making and collaboration with professionals from other disciplines in the future?
Use
Use in IPE context before students have started direct interaction with patients
Variation for IDE: Instead of using the codes of ethics, ask students to identify their top 5-6 personal values. Engage in similar activity focusing on interdisciplinary group project, for example.
