At the Center for Faculty Innovation, we offer support for instructors from all disciplines and at all points in their career to create or revise their courses. We encourage a backward or integrated design process, where instructors get clear about the objectives or outcomes they want students to fulfill by the end of the learning experience, the various forms of assessment that will indicate progress along the way, and the learning activities that can support practice and feedback. Intentionality, reflection, iteration, and learning-centeredness are all crucial parts of this design process.

In the past, to support JMU faculty in their course design efforts, we have offered jmUDESIGN, a five-day summer course design institute; a two-day online version jmUDESIGN – Virtual Edition; as well as various faculty learning communities of colleagues designing their courses. We also partner routinely with instructional designers and other staff in JMU Libraries.
