The Assistant Director of Student and Program Development supports student learning and leadership through community engaged programs, including Madison Community Scholars and the Alternative Break Program. This role develops educational experiences, builds relationships with community partners, and creates opportunities that help students grow personally and professionally while making a positive impact in their communities.

Bio:

Brian Ortega joined James Madison University in 2026, bringing more than fourteen years of experience in nonprofit leadership, strategic partnerships, education, and public policy. Prior to JMU, he held leadership roles with local and nationally recognized organizations including UnidosUS, Acero Schools, the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, and the National Newcomer Network, where he worked to expand educational opportunities through community engagement, partnership development, advocacy, and organizational strategy. Brian earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Northeastern Illinois University. As a first-generation immigrant and the first in his family to graduate from a four-year university, he is passionate about advancing educational opportunity, building strong community partnerships, and empowering others through leadership and service. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, and walking his dogs.
