Senior Art Opening at artWorks

artWorks GALLERY
Located at 131 Grace Street, within a short walk from Duke Hall, artWorks Gallery is a loft space located in the former Graves Electric building.

artWorks is JMU’s student-run gallery, exhibiting work by undergraduate and graduate students. The gallery features moveable walls; hardwood floors; large windows; and a high, open ceiling.

Exhibits change, on average, every two weeks.

Opening receptions are held on the first Monday of each show from 5–7pm. Regular gallery hours are held during the academic year only: Monday– Thursday, 12–5pm; Friday, 12–4pm; Closed Saturday and Sunday (Saturday, by appointment only). For information on exhibitions and to verify hours of operation, please call 540.568.7175. Exhibitions in the artWorks Gallery are sponsored by the School of Art, Design and Art History.

NEW IMAGE GALLERY
Located at 131 Grace Street, inside of artWorks Gallery, New Image Gallery features contemporary photography by regional, national, and international artists. Entrance is on the side of the building, 2nd floor.

DUKE HALL GALLERY OF FINE ART

Duke Gallery of Fine Art is a professional gallery featuring changing exhibitions of international, national and regional significance. In addition to showing contemporary art, a hallmark of the gallery’s mission is to demonstrate art’s multicultural and interdisciplinary dynamic. Duke Gallery is located in Duke Hall.


Regular gallery hours are held during the academic year: Monday–Friday, 10–5pm; Saturday and Sunday, closed. For information about exhibitions and hours of operation, please call 540.568.6918. INSTITUTE FOR VISUAL STUDIES

The Institute for Visual Studies (IVS) at James Madison University is a center for scholarly, scientific and creative inquiry into the nature and workings of images. An incubator of new ideas, the institute fosters discovery, and the generation of artworks, scholarly products, and applications by multidisciplinary teams of students and faculty.

IVS is open Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm and by appointment. For more information, please call 540-568-5656.

MADISON ART COLLECTION
Containing over 35,000 art and cultural objects from the Neolithic through the 20th Century, the Madison Art Collection is located in the Festival Conference & Student Center, Room 1000.

The gallery's collection was donated to the university in 1965 by an Indondesian collector and formed into the Madison Art Collection in 2003.  

The Madison Art Collection preserves and exhibits works to the public, serving both as a steward and interpreter of cultural common wealth.  In addition, each year the Madison Art Collection hosts about 4,000 students and 2,000 adults, including the university's students and faculty.  They strive to host many educational programs for children kindergarten through twelfth grade.  

Exhibitions from the permanent collection are displayed in the Lisanby Museum (Room 1108).

Prism Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting works that emphasize aspects of diversity, including areas of culture, religion, gender and sexuality (Lower Level Hallway).

Prism International Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting works that explore global culture (Upper Level).

Little Gallery Underground
Located on the lower level of the JMU Music Building, in the Music Library (room B59), is a place for music visualized. This gallery features rotating displays of art by local artists, both within the JMU community and beyond. What makes this gallery unique is the connection between visual art and music. The gallery is open for all to visit during Music Library operational hours.
