The LC Micro-Gallery adorns a hallway in the Learning Centers, transforming the educational and workplace environment (it adjoins our copy room) by carving out a small space to appreciate the creativity of our JMU community. The gallery displays work by JMU students and employees and is open to guests whether or not they have an appointment with the Learning Centers. Brandie Dziegiel is a visual artist based out of Fort Valley, VA, currently pursuing her MFA in Studio Art at JMU. She received her B.A. in Art Education with minors in Studio Art and Art History from the University of Maine.

Her work functions as allegorical, rooted in the natural world. She uses the printmaking process as a mnemonic device to approach psychological schemas such as intergenerational trauma and environmental grief. Each print is a personal landscape filled with mythic elements and earthly creatures that dwell in the present while also reaching to a “secondary realm” that may exist in the Post-Anthropocene.

She has earned multiple ‘Emerging Artist’ grants and has had work published and exhibited in a variety of juried group exhibitions. She has dedicated half a decade working in conservation and is a United States Coast Guard Veteran.

Jeremy Starn earned his BFA in Photography from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. He has worked as a photojournalist in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Central America before moving to Virginia in 2023. 

His “Unnatural Nature” series applies the methodologies of queer ecology to imagine new possibilities for what “nature” photography can look like when images of the nonhuman can dream of life outside the rectangular frame.

His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC, New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut, Candela Gallery in Richmond, Virginia, and the Staunton Augusta Art Center in Virginia and received a 26-27 Graduate Fellowship by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He teaches black and white film and digital photography and is an MFA candidate at JMU.
