A program for new Pell-recipient students to JMU 

Join other new students to JMU in a new bridge program that helps you ease the transition to James Madison University while meeting new friends, engaging faculty and peer mentors, and exploring the campus community. 

The Madison Momentum program is a 2.5 day experience where you move-in early to campus, start learning in a college classroom, get familiar with the campus layout, and begin using campus resources. Getting a head start on college basics can help you start your JMU career and fall semester successfully! 

Madison Momentum Details

Who: Any incoming in-state JMU student who is eligible to receive a Federal Pell grant, all majors are eligible (50 student limit) 

What: 2.5 day academic preparation & transition program 

When: Aug 19-21, 2026 

Where: On the JMU campus

Madison Momentum is a chance to get a head start on your JMU experience before the rest of campus arrives. You will move in early, meet fellow JMU students, and build skills and connections that will carry you through your time at JMU.
Wednesday, August 19 – Friday, August 21, 2026. You will stay on campus after Madison Momenutum for the university’s Weeks of Welcome programming.
No. Madison Momentum is a full-program commitment. All participants are expected to be present for the entirety of the program, August 19–21.
All activities take place on campus and in the Harrisonburg community. You will move into your assigned residence hall for the academic year, so no separate housing arrangements are needed.
Move-in is the morning of Wednesday August 19th. Residence Life will reach out at the beginning of August with information about housing assignments and how to schedule your move-in. You will sign up for a move-in a window between 8am - 11am. 
We will eat together in the dining halls or share catered meals in our meeting space. You can share any dietary restrictions in the registration form.
There are no costs! This includes all meals during Madison Momentum, any programming materials, event costs, and transportation for any events off-campus. If you are living on campus, housing with early move-in is included.
