Adding Printers Using the IP Address
Special Case: HP Color LaserJet3600n (and certain other HP models)
For the HP Color LaserJet 3600n printer, you cannot use the Printer Setup Utility on Mac OS X. Rather, you must follow these steps:
- Open the HP Printer Selector, which can be found under the Applications or Utilities folder.
- Click the More Printers button.
- Choose TCP/IP. It will detect printers attached via the network. Your HP Color LaserJet 3600n should already be assigned a valid IP address and be connected to the network. If it is not, please call the HelpDesk at 568-3555 so we can notify Desktop Services to call you to set up an appointment (Faculty/Staff/JMU-owned Printer Only).
- Select the HP Color LaserJet 3600n printer it detected and then clicked Add.
- Open the application from which you want to print.
- For the initial printing, choose Print, Bonjour printers and select the printer.
- Now, the printer will show up in the usual list of printers to select from when wanting to print.
For most printers you will do as follows:
- First open the Printer Setup Utility
- This can be accessed by opening the hard drive, entering the Applications folder, and then the Utilities folder
- Once the program is open click the Add button
- A Printer Browser window will now appear
- Make sure the IP Printer option is selected and if the printer is a HP select HP Jet Direct - Socket from the Protocol: drop down menu, otherwise choose Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
- Feel free to adjust the name to your liking
- Now enter the IP address of the printer in the Address: field
- If the printer utility is able to detect the printer it may autonomically pick the correct printer driver in the Print Using: field
- If the utility cannot detect the correct drivers you may have to pick them from the drop down menu or select Generic PostScript Printer if the model is not listed
- After this is finished click the Add button
- If an Installable Options window appears please click Continue
- The new printer will be displayed in the Printer List
