| Step 1: Open the "Network and Sharing Center" |
| Move the mouse to the bottom right corner until the side-box appears. Select the Search button. |
| Search for Control Panel and open the menu. Click "View network status and tasks" to open the menu shown in Figure 1 below |
On the left pane under Tasks, select Change Adapter Settings to display the Network Connections window (Figure 2).
| Step 2: Change the properties of the TCP/IP protocol to default settings |
| Right click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties from the menu. Click Yes if you are prompted by the User Access Control (UAC) window. |
Ensure the following items are checked as shown below in Figure 3. Click the "TCP/IPv4" item and select properties to open the Internet Properties window
First, make sure the General tab matches the settings shown below in Figure 4. Then, click the "Advanced" button highlighted below.
Remove any Default gateways and click the DNS tab to continue.
Remove any DNS server addresses and make your DNS tab match Figure 6 below.
Close all open windows except for the "Network and Sharing Center" (Figure 1)
| Step 3: Remove any proxy settings |
| On the bottom of the left pane in the Network and Sharing Center (under See Also) select Internet Options to display the Internet Properties window (Figure 7). |
Select the Connections tab and click the LAN settings button to display the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window shown below in Figure 8.
Make sure the checkboxes are clear as shown.
Close all open windows except the "Network and Sharing Center", Figure 1.
| Step 4: Turn on the firewall for your connection. |
| On the bottom of the left pane in the Network and Sharing Center (under See Also) select Windows Firewall to display the Windows Firewall (Figure 9). |
Select Turn Windows Firewall on or off to display the Windows Firewall Settings window (Figure 10). Click Yes if you are prompted by the User Access Control (UAC) window.
Ensure both of the Firewall options are set to "On" as shown above and click OK. Close all windows.
| Step 5: Configure Windows Updates |
| Move the mouse to the bottom right corner until the side-box appears. Select the Search button. |
| Search for Control Panel and open the menu. Search for "Windows Update" in the top right search box and open it from the results. |
Clicking the link will show you the Windows Update window shown below in Figure 12
Click the "Change settings" link as shown above to display the Windows Update Settings.
Ensure all of your settings match those shown in Figure 13 above.
Now that your computer is configured and plugged into the network connection, you will need to register your computer before your Internet applications will work. Open Internet Explorer and you will automatically be sent to the registration web page.
