Welcome to JMU! We are glad that you are joining this vibrant academic community. Faculty Welcome Week is JMU's new faculty orientation program that will help you get started at JMU, connected with your new colleagues, and oriented to the institution and its culture.

Throughout this week, you will encounter programs that

  • Welcome faculty to JMU
  • Offer opportunities for networking and community building
  • Enhance the success of faculty by encouraging a comprehensive approach to career planning
  • Engage faculty in professional development that supports a diverse range of faculty careers and identities
  • Orient participants that are new to JMU to the institution's culture
  • Provide faculty with timely resources related to teaching, scholarship, service, and more

The programs on Monday (JMU Community Welcome, 11:30 AM - 5 PM) and Thursday (JMU Structure, Culture, and People, 8:30 AM - 12 PM) are part of the required new faculty orientation specified in section III.A.20 of the faculty handbook.

To access information provided by Human Resources about new employee onboarding and benefits at JMU, visit the Dukes at Work web page for instructional faculty.

Partner/Sponsor: Office of the Provost

Who Attends Faculty Welcome?

All new full- and part-time faculty who are new to JMU. (Even if you have been at another institution, you should attend Faculty Welcome to meet new colleagues and explore the academic culture of JMU.)

Returning faculty: All JMU faculty who want to connect with their colleagues and are interested in attending the workshops and other sessions offered as part of Faculty Welcome.

Invitations are sent via email to newly hired faculty in July. If you do not receive an invitation, please accept our apologies and still plan to attend and sign up through the registration link!

Flexibility and Accessibility

This year’s Faculty Welcome program will be offered in person.  Due to the interactive nature of CFI’s Faculty Welcome programs, we generally do not record sessions or make them available asynchronously. The Center for Faculty Innovation strives to make its programs welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all our participants. If you have any accessibility needs or there are considerations (e.g., disability, wellness, cultural) you want us to know about, please note them when you sign up for Faculty Welcome or reach out to cfi@jmu.edu.
