Political Science 1996 & Master of Public Administration 2000
Peirce Macgill ('96, '00)
Major: Political Science ('96)
Graduate degree: Master of Public Administration, JMU ('00)
Current job:
Deputy Director, Harrisonburg Economic Development
Previous professional experience:
First worked for Senator Chuck Robb. Found out politics wasn't for me. Went back to school and discovered a profession that I'd never heard of - economic development. Moved to Baltimore (where my wife, who I met at JMU, was from) and worked in economic development there for 15 years. Always loved JMU and stayed in touch, and the opportunity opened up to move here. And for the third time, in my life, and all because of JMU, I moved to Harrisonburg.
In what ways did the JMU Political Science Department prepare you for your career?
Political Science reinforced my interest and desire to work in govenment. Urban Politics class shed light on local government. The MPA program prepared me for working in a team and led me to discovering my current profession.
Highlights of your JMU experience
Well, getting two degress first. But more so the feeling of home and being comfortable on campus. MPA was a real highlight because at that point, I really appreciated school/learning/professors more.
