Where can we stay?

Some area hotels and motels offer discounts to families attending Orientation.  You can select from our list to make your reservation today.  Don’t forget to mention that you are attending JMU Orientation when making your reservation.

When do we check in?

Check-in for Orientation begins at 7:30 am in the Student Success Center.

If you need to take care of one of the following items, please be at the Student Success Center by 7:30 am:

  • Activate or ask questions about your electronic identity
  • Attend a specialty meeting (only for accepted Honors students, Centennial Scholars and athletes)
  • Attend the Army ROTC meeting

What should we bring?

  • A photo identification with your birthdate, for example a driver's license to verify your identity for your JACard
  • Dual enrollment transcripts (if applicable)-envelopes with transcripts need to be sealed with a signature across the back to indicate they have not been opened
  • Your JMU electronic identity username and password (the username and password you used to make your Orientation reservation). Questions? Contact the Information Technology Help Desk at (540) 568-3555
  • Printed copy of your fall class schedule
  • An umbrella (in case of bad weather)

What should we wear?

You will be doing some walking around our beautiful campus, so comfortable, casual clothes and shoes are a must.

Want to purchase a computer through JMU?

The JMU Bookstore Computer Program offers special academic pricing. Customized Dell and Apple computer systems have been selected to meet JMU network and academic guidelines.

JMU Bookstore staff will be available during orientation to answer all your technology questions.

Financial Aid

If you are thinking of applying for a loan, you must complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Loan Promissory Note (MPN) online.

The U.S. Department of Education requires Entrance Counseling and an MPN be completed before you can receive funds. Remember you must also have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file to apply for any form of federal and state financial aid, including Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans. Disability Accommodations

Contact our office if you, or your guests, require accommodations during Orientation. Notify us at least two weeks in advance of your Orientation date at orientation@jmu.edu or (540) 568-1787.

Student Schedule  

You'll start your day in the Student Success Center for Check-in from 7:30-8:15 am.  Be prepared to stay the full day with us, finishing up by picking up your JACard at 5:30 pm.

Here are a few things to expect out of the rest of your day:

-Receive important materials

-Attend University Welcome

-Meet your Orientation Peer Adviser

-Attend a Student Life session

-Lunch with your OPA

-Learn about General Education and Academic Advising

-Meet your academic advisor, receive information about and complete fall enrollment

Family & Guest Schedule

You'll start your day in the Student Success Center for Check-in from 7:30-8:15 am.  Be prepared to spend the full day with us, with programming ending at 5:30 pm.

Here are a few things to expect out of the rest of your day:

-Receive a helpful packet of JMU information

-Attend University Welcome

-Get answers to your academic advising and career questions

-Lunch with other families

-Learn about JMU student services, important dates and move-in logistics

-Visit with Student Services reps

-Visit the bookstore

-Get prepared for your transition as the family member of a new college student, including informative and fun presentations to get you oriented to JMU and answer your important questions.
