Support CMSS

40th Anniversary Core Themes
CMSS seeks to empower students, alumni, community members, and external partners to commit to the future of the department by aligning their support with CMSS’s mission, vision, and goals. This commitment is expressed through time, talent, and treasure:
  • Time – Investing time in engaging with CMSS and its students both physically and digitally (e.g., attending programs and events, engaging with communications, social media, and outreach efforts).
  • Talent – Contributing skills and expertise as collaborators with CMSS to create mentoring opportunities, strengthen professional networks, and support student development (e.g., partnering on programs, career development initiatives, mentorship, and inspiration for future pathways).
  • Treasure – Making financial contributions to CMSS through one-time or recurring gifts. Donor support enables CMSS to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and continue developing students. This campaign encourages giving at all levels, affirming that every gift matters and that investing in CMSS is an investment in community and belonging—regardless of the broader campus or social climate.
  • Testimony - Sharing personal stories, reflections, and experiences that speak to the impact of CMSS. Testimony helps preserve the department’s
  • Community is central to CMSS’s identity and work. CMSS creates spaces of belonging for students, alumni, and campus partners, and this campaign will support efforts to strengthen and expand those spaces and opportunities.
  • Through initiatives such as Mosaic Connections, targeted outreach, and inclusive programming, CMSS will intentionally reach new students and those who may not yet be familiar with the department. The campaign also centers the importance of documenting and sharing student stories to inspire future Dukes and demonstrate the impact and purpose behind CMSS’s work.
  • In addition, this campaign prioritizes multigenerational unity by deepening alumni engagement. By leveraging data in partnership with Collaborative Philanthropy & Volunteer Leadership and Alumni Relations, CMSS will strengthen communication with alumni and create meaningful opportunities for them to engage with students, CMSS, and JMU. A future aspiration includes expanding alumni groups to foster sustained community and connection beyond graduation.
  • Culture is a foundational element of CMSS’s mission. The department intentionally creates opportunities for students across campus to engage with diverse cultures and experiences. Throughout this campaign, CMSS will continue to celebrate identity, intersectionality, and belonging by offering spaces where students can gather, express their cultures, and develop their voices.
  • A key component of this work is CMSS’s Cultural Heritage Month programming, which provides inclusive, educational, and affirming experiences that highlight the richness of multicultural identities and communities. Campaign support will allow CMSS to sustain and expand these programs, ensuring they remain accessible, responsive, and impactful.
  • This campaign seeks to strengthen relationships among students, alumni, and community members, reinforcing CMSS’s role as a bridge with multiple pathways to opportunity, support, mentorship, and belonging. Key focus areas include:
    • Reaching students who may not frequently engage with CMSS
    • Expanding personal and professional mentorship opportunities between alumni and students
    • Maintaining strong connections with alumni who view CMSS as a “home away from home,” ensuring they remain informed and involved even as they build lives beyond campus
    • Strengthening collaborations with campus partners to support recruitment, retention, and success for multicultural students
