The International Network of Universities offers an online program which addresses a range of areas relating to Global Citizenship and the United Nations SDGs. There are two intakes for the program each year, one in March and one in October. We are now accepting students for the program beginning in October 2026. This opportunity is free and open to all JMU students.

This online certificate program explores what it means to be a global citizen through learning and reflecting on a range of key global issues.  The learning objectives for students undertaking the program are:

• To gain knowledge and an understanding of current affairs, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, global issues, and trends.
• To analyze and interpret cultural information and demonstrate a clear understanding of complex elements such as history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, beliefs and practices.
• To foster civic-mindedness and a sense of societal responsibility, promoting actions and activities motivated by concern for the public good and the humanity as a whole.
• Develop a commitment to democratic principles of human dignity and respect, recognize the diversity of experiences and global inequalities regarding these rights, and suggest appropriate actions.

Participants will complete 3 core sessions and 3 elective sessions, aimed at fostering intercultural communication and a deeper understanding of global issues.

Now Accepting Applications for the 2027 ISC

Every year, the International Network of Universities (INU) invites students from JMU and around the world to the annual International Student Conference. The 2027 conference, held at Parahyangan Catholic University in Bandung, Indonesia, will focus on the theme of Powering the Future: Youth Driving Innovation for Sustainable and Inclusive Energy Futures and will take place from 25th-30th January 2027.

JMU will select up to four lucky participants to represent JMU. Please do not apply directly through the ISC website.

Each year the conference offers a different theme but is centered around the August 6 commemoration of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The 2026 theme was UN SDGs and Sustainable Economic Development.

The INU Student Seminar features:

• Lectures and workshops with academic experts and guest speakers from around the world;
• Cultural activities, visits to local sights in Hiroshima
• Interactive workshops that encourage stimulating discussion and learning;
• A role-play of a special session of the United Nations General Assembly;
• A truly international student body

JMU doctoral students are invited to apply for the Researcher Mobility Program, an initiative designed to encourage the development of international research collaborations between members of the International Network of Universities (INU).

The Researcher Mobility Program offers faculty researchers and PhD students (or equivalent) the opportunity to establish an international research collaboration with another INU member university.  The purpose of this program is to develop joint research initiatives between INU member universities and to share expertise between research centres.  Visits should be for 2-4 weeks and should form the basis for future collaboration between the two research centres.

The Henry Fong Award is based on a competitive process available to students who attended the INU Student Seminar for Global Citizenship and Peace in Hiroshima, Japan. The 2022 award winner was a student from JMU!
