Professional Biography: 

Elizabeth A. Oldmixon is Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Curriculum and Professor of Political Science at James Madison University (JMU). In this role, she assists the provost and provides leadership in the areas of faculty development, academic policy, curriculum management, General Education, academic program review, and shared governance initiatives.

Since joining JMU in 2022, Dr. Oldmixon has been actively involved in several key initiatives, including designing shared governance processes for major revisions to the General Education curriculum and Faculty Handbook, establishing a transparent academic affairs policy process, expanding leadership development programming, and co-chairing vision and pre-implementation teams in support of The Madison Promise. Along with fellow members of the ad hoc Core Curriculum Committee, she was recently awarded the President’s Purple Star Award for her contributions to General Education renewal.

Prior to joining JMU, Dr. Oldmixon spent two decades at the University of North Texas, where she held several administrative leadership positions, including Faculty Director of Academic Policy, Faculty Director (chair) if the College of Applied and Collaborative Studies, Special Assistant to the Provost, Graduate Advisor, and Assistant Chair in the Department of Political Science. During her tenure, she led an interdisciplinary academic unit, guided policy development and governance initiatives, and supported enrollment growth and student success efforts on UNT’s branch campus.

Dr. Oldmixon’s research and teaching interests focus on religion and legislative politics. She is the author or editor of three books and numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and previously served as editor-in-chief of the journal Politics and Religion. She is a former Fulbright Scholar (University College Cork, Ireland), American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow, and Texas Academic Leadership Academy Fellow. She is most recently author of Culture, Institutional Politics, and Challenge for Higher Education. 

Dr. Oldmixon earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida, an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of North Texas, and bachelor’s degree in Humanities and Political Science from Providence College.
