CSM Undergraduate Research

The College of Science and Mathematics Undergraduate Research Pre-Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is a student success program that helps new CSM majors (biology, biotechnology, biophysical chemistry, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, geology, environmental earth science, or physics) foster a sense of belonging before Weeks of Welcome while learning about the benefits and “how-tos" of undergraduate research. Participants will:

  • Move in early (August 19, 2026)
  • Build lasting bonds with peers and CSM faculty and staff.
  • Explore campus resources to support your whole self from the classroom to your well-being.
  • Learn from students and faculty what undergraduate research or internships involve and what opportunities exist at JMU and elsewhere.
  • Learn about the benefits of doing undergraduate research, the skills you will learn, and begin communicating the benefits of doing undergraduate research.
  • Learn how to get involved in these opportunities early. Who do you talk to? What do you say?
  • Leave the program with new friends, real support and a real sense of belonging.

The pre-WOW event will include a field trip off campus to get a sense of the natural beauty of the region and how place-based education can aid your learning.

Program FAQs

Participating allows you to learn about research and internship opportunities, so you are better prepared to pursue options once the school year starts. You will connect with new peers, gain early access to campus resources, and acquire the tools needed to navigate the collegiate experience.

The CSM Undergraduate Research Pre-WOW program will begin on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and end on Friday, August 21, 2026. Program participants will get the opportunity to move into their residence hall early. The CSM Undergraduate Research Pre-WOW program will end in time for you to participate in all the Weeks of Welcome events. Participating in CSM Undergraduate Research Pre-WOW gives you a head start on learning the campus, making friends, and making JMU/Harrisonburg your home.

Program participants will move into the residence halls from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Wednesday August 19, 2026.

The program is free, and all meals are provided during the program.

All activities for the program will take place throughout the day and within the surrounding area, which means you will be able to live in the residence hall assigned to you this academic year.

All incoming first-year and transfer students with a College of Science & Mathematics major (biology, biotechnology, biophysical chemistry, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, geology, environmental earth science, or physics) are welcome to join us!

CSM Undergraduate Research Pre-WOW will have up to 20 New Dukes participating. During this experience, we will spend a lot of time connecting as a large group and within small groups facilitated by CSM faculty and staff.
