How to Apply
Application and Enrollment Deadlines
- Apply for Fall semester no later than August 1st
- Apply for Spring semester no later than December 1st
Course enrollment for Online Program (OP) course sections begins:
- July 1
- April 15
The application process differs depending on whether you are applying for an M. Ed. or a certificate program, or if you are a non-degree seeking student. Below are the steps to apply.
How to apply for a Master of Education with a Concentration in Educational Leadership
STEP 1: Review the Admissions Requirements for the Master's Degree.
STEP 2: Click here to apply now: https://www.applyweb.com/jmug/index.ftl Create an account if you do not already have one, and login. Scroll down to Education, to select Educational Leadership.
STEP 3: Complete and submit your online application, and pay a non-refundable $60 fee. Include your official transcripts on your application, and be sure to request letters of recommendation there, too.
Order your official transcripts from all universities and colleges where you received credits.
Email transcripts to grad@jmu.edu or mail them to The Graduate School, James Madison University, MSC 6702, 100 E. Grace St. Harrisonburg, VA 22807
STEP 4: When your application is complete, you will be contacted to schedule an interview.
STEP 5: Look for important e-mails to activate your e-id and MyMadison account, there you will click on the Applicant Center tab where you can check the status of your application.
STEP 6: Once your application has been reviewed by the appropriate program, the program will submit an acceptance or denial decision to the Graduate School. Some admissions come with conditional or provisional terms. View the admissions decision in the Applicant Center of MyMadison and if admitted, respond to accept your offer there, too. Admitted students will receive a letter that specifies the effective date of admission (which normally coincides with the semester requested on the application) the conditions of acceptance if applicable and other important information.
I got in! Now what?
After being accepted into a graduate program, applicants can then log into the Applicant Center through MyMadison and either accept or decline the offer of admission.
How to enroll in courses once admitted
After being accepted into the M.Ed. or graduate certificate program, you will be contacted to discuss your pathway through the program of study. Then, you must contact Theresa Jennings via email at jennintl@jmu.edu and request the courses in which to enroll. This process will be followed every semester.
How to apply for a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership
STEP 1: Click here to apply now: https://www.jmu.edu/grad/prospective/how-to-apply.shtml Create an account if you do not already have one. Indicate the appropriate certificate program on the form.
STEP 2: Complete and submit the online application. Pay a non-refundable $60 application fee.
STEP 3: Send your official transcripts to Ms. Theresa Jennings.
STEP 4: Look for important e-mails to activate your e-id and MyMadison account.
STEP 5: Check the status of your application in MyMadison.

Applicants will be able to view the admission decision in the Applicant Center of MyMadison.
