About Harrisonburg

Located just two hours from Washington, D.C., the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia blossoms in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The Friendly City provides a variety of things to see and places to eat. And it doesn’t hurt to end each day with a stunning sunset grazing across the Blue Ridge Mountains.

This college town is situated in one of the country’s richest areas for recreation and adventure. Welcome to your new backyard.

Campus Diversity

JMU’s inclusive campus community comes together as one thanks in part to the 33 educational and celebratory programs operated by our Center for Multicultural Students Services. Areas of interest include culturally based sororities and fraternities, religion, academics, civic engagement opportunities and more. CMSS is truly a gateway to engagement with diversity at JMU.

Clubs and Organizations

Participation in clubs and organizations is a great way to relieve stress, find new friends and discover new ways of thinking. The options run the gamut at JMU because we know that participating in clubs helps a student with many facets of his or her outside-the-classroom preparation for life.

From community service organizations to special interests, you are sure to find your people here.

Health Center and Counseling Center

JMU’s Health Center and Counseling Center are driven each day by the concept that good health is absolutely vital to student success. Both of these important JMU organizations are staffed by professionals who are driven to deliver their expert care in genuine and confidential ways.

The state-of-the-art health center features general medicine, urgent care, women’s health and even a nurse clinic for allergy injections and vaccines. The counseling center offers a huge range of services, including individual and group counseling, treatment programs, psychiatric services and wilderness therapy workshops, just to name a few.

Living on Campus

Our students come from major cities and small towns. They come from Virginia and 45 other states, and they hail from more than 50 different countries.

JMU quickly feels like home for all students because this is a friendly community of learners that holds doors for one another, that is eager to meet new people, grab lunch between classes and even try a new fitness hobby. With so many rich offerings on campus, you are sure to find a home here.

Spirit and Traditions

Here at JMU, we bleed purple and gold – school spirit is a huge part of the Madison Experience. Whether you’re proudly taking selfies with Duke Dog at a football game or holding a door for a fellow Duke, you’ll see why there is so much JMU love to go around.

Campus is full of long-standing traditions that connect Dukes across generations, and the best tradition is leaving campus with a fulfilling and memorable experience.

Student Government and Leadership

If you find yourself wanting to grow as a leader during your time at JMU, the Student Government Association is likely to be an ideal fit for you.

The make-up of this body includes a leadership team comprised of the Executive Council, Executive Staff and eight Committee Chairs, along with committee senators and representatives and also class councils for each respective graduation year class. The opportunities for leadership are virtually endless, and the experience gained from participating is immeasurable.

Study Abroad

JMU Study Abroad has a vast reach, and has been paving the way for JMU students to expand their horizons for decades.

Historically, there are more than 90 programs a year in 60 different countries. Annually, some 1,400 JMU students take part in study-abroad offerings. Fun fact: JMU is #1 among peer-level schools in the number of short-term programs we offer and also how many our students take part in them.

University Recreation

University Recreation, also known as UREC, is more than a place to sweat. It is a place to learn about healthy lifestyles and develop positive habits that our students take with them when they leave us.

UREC operates a huge award-winning recreation facility along with an impressive number of additional indoor and outdoor facilities around campus, including University Park.

From helping students stay well, stay fit, get involved and become more well-rounded in so many different aspects of their lives, JMU’s University Recreation absolutely lives up to its motto Motivating Madison into Motion.
