Supporting students at the right moment can make a meaningful difference in their success. As part of James Madison University's commitment to early student success, the Office of Student Success Analytics (SSA) uses text messaging as a proactive and personalized way to connect with students throughout their academic journey.

As part of JMU's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and broader early student success initiatives, SSA sends periodic check-in texts designed to gather timely feedback, better understand students' experiences, and connect them with relevant resources and support. Survey topics and outreach timing are intentionally aligned with common milestones, challenges, and experiences students may encounter throughout the academic year.

These conversations help SSA identify emerging needs, provide individualized support, and ensure students feel connected to the JMU community.

Who sends the texts:

Check-in texts are sent by Student Success Systems Coordinators, Regina Wine-Nash and Austin D. Van Horn

SSA does not use AI-generated responses or automated chatbots. Every student response is reviewed by a staff member, allowing for personalized outreach and individualized support.

Who receives the texts:

First-Year and New Transfer StudentsTransitioning to a new university can bring both excitement and challenges. To support students during this important period, SSA sends check-in texts approximately every one to two weeks. Topics focus on academic success, well-being, belonging, campus engagement, and overall adjustment to life at JMU.

Second-Year Students: Second-year students receive monthly check-in texts that address experiences commonly associated with the second year of college. Topics may include academic rigor, sense of belonging, involvement in high-impact learning experiences, career exploration, and personal growth.

Graduate students: Graduate students often balance academic responsibilities alongside professional, family, and personal commitments. SSA sends three to four texts each semester to check-in, provide support, and recognize the unique experiences of graduate students.

Students studying abroad: Although students may be studying across the globe, they remain an important part of the JMU community. SSA sends weekly check-in texts to students studying abroad, offering support and connection throughout their international experience. Topics may include community building, cultural adjustment, academics, financial wellness, and overall well-being.
