Instructor of Theatre
Rachel E. Herrick is a Shenandoah Valley native, specializing in costume design, construction, directing, and theatre education. Rachel graduated from James Madison University (JMU) with a Bachelor of the Arts in Theatre and Dance in 2014, after which she began to design costumes for Washington and Lee University, Charlottesville Opera, Eastern Mennonite University and other Virginia theatres. She received her Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from the University of Idaho in 2024, with a focus on costume design and production, as well as directing and pedagogy. Outside of her responsibilities at JMU, Rachel enjoys directing Broadway High School students for VHSL One Act play competitions, and has done so since 2023. In July, 2026 DC Theatre Arts named the District Fringe show When I Was written by Makayla Baker-Paxton and directed by Rachel E. Herrick, Reviewer Recommended, DCTA Best of Fringe 2026.
Serving as an adjunct instructor at JMU, Rachel currently teaches Introduction to Theatre, as well as designs costumes for JMU Dance Mainstage concerts and School of Music Opera productions.
