Frequently Asked Questions

Academic costs and expenses are covered through the McMillin Center and the Psy. D. program. Graduate assistants receive an additional stipend of approximately $19,200 per year. This stipend amount is subject to change from year to year. Please reach out for more information. 

With the McMillin Center, you will have numerous opportunities to further develop your skills in sport and performance psychology. The experiences are offered yearly and vary depending on your academic year. 
  • Development and delivery of sport psychology services to JMU student-athletes as well as D-III and high school teams.
    • Dukes Excel: Workshops provided to the JMU student-athletes
    • Dukes Perform: Workshops provided to JMU performing arts students
    • Community Services: Workshops and presentations for the local athletic community, including coaches clinics and presentations to sport organizations
  • First-year students are placed within a local D-III college athletic department to provide clinical and performance psychology services. 
  • Second-year students begin to provide mental performance consulting and clinical services to a JMU team. 
  • Third-year students have the opportunity to provide counseling services to JMU student-athletes at JMU’s Counseling Center.
  • Content creation and website management (e.g., social media, videos, infographics, flyers). 
  • Participation as a member of an interdisciplinary team of athletic-based staff, which aims to address student-athlete mental health needs on campus – Care and Recovery Enhancement Team (CARE Team).

Robert Harmison – a licensed psychologist in Virginia, a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), an AASP-certified supervisor, and former AASP President - serves as the primary supervisor for graduate assistants through the McMillin Center.
