Proposals for Private Research Workspace
Are you part of a team working on research or an invention idea? JMU X-Labs is seeking proposals from a team of faculty members, students, or a combination of both, to utilize a private workspace for research.
Requirements:
- Cross-disciplinary team of students and/or faculty (minimum of 3 colleges/departments represented) collaborating to solve a real-world problem
- Need for specialized equipment to ideate and prototype
- Comfortable sharing outcomes at the conclusion of research
Submit your proposal to co-create in a private research workspace at JMU X-Labs. Deadline to apply is Friday, December 12, 2025.
Benefits:
- A 13’ x 7’ private workspace in The Lab at JMU X-Labs - a hands-on Design Thinking Studio.
- Private workspace will include tables, chairs, corkboard, and whiteboard
- Private workspace reserved for up to 12 months (January 2026 - December 2026)
- Use of The Lab outside courses and special events
- Access to low-fidelity prototyping supplies and brainstorming and ideation tools
- Support from JMU X-Labs Lab Manager and JMU X-Labs leadership team to journey your research from ideation to proof of concept to alpha prototype, including supporting partnerships with relevant innovation spaces and labs across campus
- Training on equipment in The Lab to support prototyping including: Full Spectrum Pro Series Laser Cutter (PS48), GS-24 Vinyl Cutter, large format printer, and woodworking and metalworking tools
- Custom design sprint facilitated by JMU X-Labs leadership team to accelerate creative problem-solving for the research team
Outcomes:
- The research team will participate in reflection sessions facilitated by JMU X-Labs leadership to collect meaningful data from the partnership. The research gathered on the partnership may be published in accordance with university policy.
- The research team and their work would be featured in JMU X-Labs articles, reports, social media, and additional forms of print and digital communications.
- The research team would have the opportunity to propose a JMU X-Labs course that would support their research, the foundations of JMU X-Labs courses, and student development.
- At the conclusion of the contract, the research team will present their deliverables to leadership from JMU X-Labs and the Division of Research, Economic Development and Innovation.
- Potential opportunity post-contract for team to continue research through grants.
