Through this initiative, our goal is to help transition students into the legal drinking age in a safe and healthy manner. In partnership with local downtown businesses, a coupon book has been created that students can get by completing a brief educational session either in-person or virtually. It only takes about 10 minutes. The educational session provides students with skills and information for an enjoyable and safe celebration.

We would like to thank our 2020-2021 Community Partners:

  • Capital Ale House
  • The Golden Pony
  • Pale Fire Brewing Co.
  • Ruby’s Arcade
  • Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Company

Students may participate in this program during the two weeks leading up to their 21st birthday; an email invitation with information about in-person or virtual participation is sent to all students turning 21. Topics covered include celebration plans, realistic strategies around drinking, and more.

In-Person Participation Option
Drop-in hours are Tuesdays from 2 4:30 p.m. in The Well (first floor of SSC between the Pharmacy and Lavender Lounge).

Students may stop in for a brief chat with one of our 21st Birthday team members about their celebration plans. We follow JMU safety protocols. Students leave with the coupon book and informational resources. If a student would like to participate in person, but cannot make the drop-in hours, they may contact us to schedule an alternate time.

Virtual Participation Option
Students may participate in the virtual module through the link in the invitation email. After completing the module, participants receive email instructions on how to pick up their coupon book and informational resources.
