Trip to Shenandoah Musical Theatre
On July 29, a group of 27 travelled to Shenandoah University to see Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Thank you to Elizabeth Ihle and Steve Smith for arranging the tickets and transportation!
Summer Picnic
The August 12 FEA Summer Picnic drew one of our largest crowds; more than 100 convened at the Atlantic Union Bank Center Campanelli Room for a spirited celebration. In honor of our nation’s 250th anniversary and our namesake’s prominent role in declaring its freedom, Michael Galgono (in powdered wig) offered famous quotes by James Madison (e.g., If we were all angels, Mr. Smith, no government would be necessary) during Steve’s welcoming remarks.
We also kicked off our 25th anniversary as the JMU Faculty Emeriti Association. Steve acknowledged our founders in November of 2001 and President Rose who supported their efforts. He thanked our seven former FEA presidents, with special tribute to Kay Knickrehm. Steve introduced our current FEA officers and group leaders, including new initiatives. He also gave us a timeline of the planned 2026-27 activities.
We truly stand on big shoulders as we carry forward commitments to Madison’s legacy: The advancement and diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty. Oh yes, Dolley Madison (aka Brenda Seal) was also there to remind us that the best way to be happy is to make others happy.
Note: You may be wondering why we call it a picnic when it takes place indoors. Historically we held the picnic at the university farm, but several times bad weather in the form of extreme heat or rain made it a less than happy occasion. Uneven ground and a terrible parking lot were also negative factors. In order to accommodate our members, at some point the FEA Board decided it was prudent to move the event indoors.
The name remained as the event is different from our luncheons – we have an informal buffet and an informal program that does not feature a speaker. Both the Christmas Gala and and the Picnic are considered to be social events. The Gala is our most formal event and everyone receives a gift. The Fall and Spring luncheons in contrast are gatherings which feature a speaker of interest to the university community and are opportunities for social interaction and for enlightenment. When there is official business to be conducted, it happens at these events.
Tour of Library
Following the luncheon, about 25 FEA members toured the newly renovated Carrier Library. We were very impressed with the open, airy feeling and by the comfortable and welcoming facility. (And yes! There are actual physical books.) The reading room on the top floor is spectacular, and we were gratified to find the original entrance reopened with the beautiful staircase intact. In addition one of the former reading rooms has been retained with its original furniture. If you have not visited, you should definitely stop by.
